Active Research Project

BioSmartPave

Development of sustainable and durable asphalt road surfaces using BioFoamBitumen and recycled aggregates. A three-year research collaboration between B2SQUARE, RWTH Aachen University, and Albr3cht Supply Concepts GmbH.

All experimental work is conducted in the high-specification laboratories of the Institut für Straßenwesen (ISAC) at RWTH Aachen — one of Germany's leading road engineering research institutes.

Selection, laboratory evaluation, and integration procedures for recycled and eco-friendly fibres. Includes CT-scan analysis of homogeneity and fibre distribution.

Full life cycle analysis (LCA) of bio-bitumen production from cashew shells, field trials at RWTH Aachen test track, and ongoing long-term performance monitoring via X-ray CT and FTIR.

Construction of 2×50m test sections at duraBASt, accelerated load testing with the MLS 30 mobile load simulator, and implementation on a public road in Nörvenich.

Art Meets
Innovation

We supported Christian & Jonathan from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in reimagining BioBitumen as a medium for contemporary art. Using Instant BioBitumen B2PURE® in a series of creative experiments, they pushed the material to its expressive limits — exploring texture, fluidity, and the visual language of carbon capture.

The project bridges material science and artistic practice: BioBitumen, typically engineered for roads, becomes a canvas. The result challenges how we perceive industrial materials — and the role innovation plays in shaping culture.
